Solas Global Solutions makes sustainable, durable, price-competitive wood alternatives from the agricultural waste of sugarcane known as bagasse. Our bagasse is used in pallets and full substitute pieces and parts as planks and boards. It is a full-on substitute for wood, often with better technical specifications regarding weight, strength, durability and ecological impact. From OSB to planks and boards, natural bagasse can be formed and/or molded – as plastic once was considered – into any range of products as an affordable replacement to wood.
In utilizing agricultural waste that is otherwise almost always burned and turning it into the feedstock for pallet manufacturing, Solas Global Solutions significantly changes the equation on the Circular Economy. By reusing a product otherwise destined for disposal and incineration and turning it into a usable product, bagasse pallets eliminate a significant amount of Greenhouse Gasses and Carbon and promote the preservation of forestry resources for better uses than the temporary use of a wooden pallet.
Ponder the sylvan beauty of a great forest and think of it being used to move around Diet Pepsi® and Cheetos®. It sounds absurd, but that is where we are as a consuming culture. We can do better.
Sugarcane is a particularly hearty and fast-growing grass. Its stalks reach a height of several meters; after harvesting and extraction of the sugar and molasses one has waste fibers known as bagasse. The lignin – or connective tissue – of bagasse is uncommonly strong – often surpassing the artificial strengths of industrial plastics. Mixing bagasse with a proprietary all-natural starch-based binder from tree bark unique to southern India in place of synthetic resins and glues, the EARTHPALLET™ changes the ecological impact of a simple pallet.
It is like natural butter compared to the fakeness of margarine.
EARTHPALLET™ are 100% Biodegradable and Compostable thus providing a great example of the “circular economy”. By diverting pallets both from landfills and from incineration, use of bagasse pallets significantly reduces its carbon imprint and contributes to a substantial reduction in deforestation, greenhouse gas emissions, pollution, and material wastes.
